To Customize, or Not Customize, That is the question.

A few months ago Mama Widow and the rest of the Black Widow family challenged the Ambassadors with a contest that involved submitting the most photos of Black Widow products. Over the course of the competition, each Ambassador had to beg and borrow from friends and family to help submit the most pictures. Bill Cuebas took an early lead in the competition and was on cruise control until the final day. Not knowing what he would submit on the final day I decided to pull a last minute EBay move and enter everything I had left to try and pull off the upset. Little did I know that Bill was nursing a toothache on the final day and wasn’t able to submit any additional pictures. Although I pulled off the upset win by default, I know he would have crushed me if he didn’t pull a “Rors” toothache during the closing round. With that being said, I would like to Thank Black Widow for the prize you are about to read about. I would also like to Thank Bill for being a good sport about the whole oral-deal.

Now lets get on to the fun stuff: The Prize. Black Widow went all out and let the winning Ambassador customize a golf bag from Vessel Bags. I will admit that I have always secretly wanted a bag tagged with my name and custom logos. However, I never looked into because I figured a custom bag like this would not be within my budget. Another reason I didn’t look into it was because of the heckling I would receive on the course from my friends. After all, customized bags and logos are only reserved for the Pro’s, right? I quickly found out how wrong I have been all these years.

I have been buying golf bags about every other year since I started playing golf. The average cost for a good quality bag runs around $300. Now if you want to add custom embroidery to the bag, look at adding on an additional $50-$100 per logo. Keep in mind that this price doesn’t include the embroidery “set up” fees. Now lets take a look at Vessel Bags. They do the ultimate golf customization. Whatever you can dream of, they can build it. Vessel claims that you can design a custom bag in minutes…but don’t believe it. You can easily get lost on the site for hours (like I did) crafting the perfect golf bag. You start off by selecting the type of bag you desire. You can pick from the Player (stand) bag or go all out and get one of the Premium bags they offer. The prices range from $350 and go up to $650 with shipping included. Once you select your bag style, you then have to pick the color scheme and composition of the bag. I must warn you now that this might be the hardest part of building the bag. You get to select a variety of different colors for your primary, secondary, and accent bag colors. Once you decide on which colors fit you and your game, you move on to the next hole and personalize it. The last step in the process is having the option to add logos or text to the front, right side, left side and to the strap of the bag. Once you finalize that step you are ready to place your order!

Depending on the design and logos you choose, bags can take anywhere from 2-8 weeks to finalize and be delivered. My bag was on the tail end of eight weeks due to my special design requests. During the entire process Vessel kept in touch with me on the bag progress and to see if I had any questions. A few weeks into the project the sent me a stitch out of the bag for my approval and asked if I wanted to make any changes. I did request one change. I noticed on the arm strap that I picked white stitching by mistake and asked if they could change it to black. Their response was, “Absolutely.” I couldn’t believe they made the change without charging me extra. They truly backed up their company goal to “provide the highest quality golf gear with 100% customer satisfaction – every time”. After they fixed my error and stitched my bag together, Vessel sent me one more image of the complete bag just before shipping it out. This was awesome and cruel at the same time. It was such a great feeling to know the bag was on its way. On the flip side, I felt like a kid again waiting for Christmas day. A few days later the bag made it to its final destination and was quickly filled with irons, tees, balls and dressed with a new Black Widow golf towel.

I’ve had the bag for about one month now and have only shared a couple of pictures with the BW staff and my golf buddies on the MGA Tour. I have received nothing but rave reviews regarding the design and quality of the bag. I have a feeling that a few more people are going to purchase one after they found out the price. You might want to order yours soon before Vessel catches on to what a great deal they offer. One last thing about Vessel…for each bag sold, they will fund a World Vision Promise Pack that provides aid to orphans and at-risk children throughout the world. The backpacks are filled with school supplies and personal hygiene items that help children in need stay healthy and realize their promise.

Now that you had a chance to see my bag, how would you design yours?

Viva Las Vegas – Black Widow Style

LasVegasSign

I am about to break all the rules with today’s blog. I am sure you are familiar with the saying, “What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas!”, but not today my Black Widow friends. I am about to spill the beans on a trip that I recently took to Sin City. A little over two weeks ago I finally decided to cash in my birthday chips and take a weekend trip to Las Vegas to play a round of golf.

Over the past six years or so I have always treated myself to a “nice round” of birthday golf and this year was no different. Knowing that I was heading to Vegas I started searching for a course that was challenging, has a great reputation and that was priced higher than my normal budget. It didn’t take long for me to come to my decision. I immediately knew that I wanted to play Bali Hai Golf Club. I’ve played this course online virtually many times and I knew I could post a low score if I only got the chance. Well, I quickly found out what this course had in store for me.

As soon as I arrived at the course I was immediately taken care of like golf royalty by the Bali Hai staff. From start to finish every employee was friendly, professional and helped me with anything I needed. After checking in I rushed to the starter’s box to see if I could team up with another golfer since I booked myself as a single. More importantly, I really needed someone to take pictures of me on the course. As I waited for another player to join me, the starter explained some of the highlights the course had to offer.

As if being located on the Las Vegas Strip wasn’t exciting enough, my first impression was that Bali Hai was a tropical paradise situated in the middle of the desert with amazing views of the Strip and the surrounding mountain ranges. The starter informed me that over the next 7,002 yards I would encounter 7 acres of water features, island greens and over 100,000 tropical plants and trees. Also spread out all over the course was Augusta white sand that was set off by black volcanic rock outcroppings. This really added a different dimension to the course and really made everything around the course stand out.

Practice and starting area

After chatting it up for a few minutes I was finally paired up with another golfer and it was go time. Looking back I know I should have waited a few extra minutes before teeing off just to calm my nerves. I’m not sure if it was the excitement of finally playing my dream course or knowing that Mandalay Bay was a few hundred yards away breathing down my neck, but I played the “Slowik Slice” out of bounds on my very first shot. How could this happen? Breakfast ball? You know it! Now that I used my breakfast ball I was ready to groove it the rest of my round.

Aside from the beautiful setting I already described, Bali Hai offers an amazing golf experience for any type of golfer. The fairways were very generous and wide open. You could clearly see any obstacles in front of you along with any “danger zones.” Many of the shorter holes will tempt you to pull your driver out and challenge you with a great risk-reward scenario that can lead to easy birdies. With that being said, Bali Hai offers some challenges as well. Take the 16th hole for example. On this day the hole was playing 108 yards and the pin was placed near the bottom left edge of the green. The green has multiple tiers and leaving it short would place you in the drink. However, going long would mean a really fast downhill putt that could also put you in the drink. Don’t even ask me how I know. One more challenging aspect of the course was another Par 3 where you could gamble on hitting the green. They let you bet up to $100 and if you hit the green they will double your money. If you miss the green, they give you a gift certificate to the Pro Shop. It was a win-win!

Finally, on to the part of my article that should have stayed in Vegas. Well, it ends up that I didn’t play that well the rest of the day. In fact, I played my worst round of the year. I shot a 102. Or as I like to say when I have a round like this, “I was out to get my monies worth!” I missed the green on the Par 3 Challenge and ended up losing the certificate for the Pro Shop. With that being said I still had an amazing time. I am so happy that I finally got to play Bali Hai and was able to cross this off my bucket list. I was lucky to be paired up with a great guy that didn’t mind my clowning around and requests for a few photo opportunities. As a parting gift I left him with a few Black Widow Poker Chips to remember the time he golfed with a BW Ambassador in Vegas. It was also a reminder for him to go out and buy the best grips in golf.

Is The World Ready To Meet Black Widow’s Newest Ambassador?

Hello from the Valley of the Sun – Arizona! My name is Mike Slowik and I was selected to be a Black Widow Ambassador for 2013. Some of you may also know me as the “2012 Black Widow Fan of the Year”.  Words cannot explain how honored and excited I am to hold both of these titles. I hate to sound cliché, but I feel like the luckiest golfer on earth! Many of you may know me from my Facebook “likes” and comments I add to Black Widow’s fan page. However, for my first blog post I want to share a little about me, how I became a fan of the best grips in golf and the Black Widow products I use.

Not even a coyote stands a chance against Black Widow.

I played my first round of golf about six years ago. I never understood why someone would want to take a stick and chase a little white ball around all day. That was until a friend of mine forced me to go golfing with him. Once I took my first swing I immediately fell in love with the game of golf. I will never forget my first drive.  It was a complete disaster, launching a good mile to the right.  It was by far the worst slice I have ever witnessed. I continued to struggle throughout the next 17 holes and finished the day shooting in the low 160’s. Being the competitive person I am, I made it my goal to learn the game of golf and to one day master it. Over the next four years I practiced and played as much as I could to lower my score from the low 160’s to a more respectable mid-90’s. That is when I found Black Widow grips, which took my game to the next level.

I got caught in Black Widow’s web a little over two years ago. At the time I was struggling with my game and could never shoot lower than a 93. I had been using the same clubs and factory grips that came with them. Do you know what the Arizona heat does to grips? Well, I never thought new grips could change my game until the day I came across a powerful advertisement for golf grips. It read, “Raise Eyebrows. Lower Scores.” The ad featured the most unique and stylish golf grips I had ever seen. The trademark Black Widow Spider was an added bonus because it is totally my style. Immediately I knew these grips would help me get to the next level. The following day I took my clubs to a local retailer to get them a well-deserved regrip. I decided to have the Fusion grips installed on my clubs. The next morning it was time to see what these grips could do. They performed…that’s what they did! These grips were firm, had an excellent feel and gave me the control I had been missing for years. I ended that day shooting an 85. The Black Widow grips were an immediate game changer.

The advertisement that changed my game forever.

I am a huge fan of every product that Black Widow offers. I am the 2012 Fan of the Year, right? In fact, I have tested every grip and own many of the additional accessories they sell. I currently use the Fusion II on all of my irons. I love the feel and the feedback they provide when hitting the ball. The same goes for the Torque grip, which I use on my all my fairway woods. My driver has the honor of being gripped with the Widow Maker. My putters have both the Widow Maker and the Signature grip. One of my favorite accessories is the Black Widow ball retriever. Yes, I do get to use it even though I live in the desert. Besides looking good…this is a ball retriever that actually works! My bag never goes to the course without its matching BW multi-use towel. And when it’s time to intimidate my opponent, that’s when you will find me representing my BW polo. Now do your game a favor and Get a Grip!

Thanks for stopping by and taking the time to get to know a little about me. Now it’s your turn to tell me, what has Black Widow done for you?
